To quickly open links in a new background tab simply click on the link with your mouse wheel (mouse wheel-click). Your mouse wheel is an often under-used browsing tool that is included on most mice.

No scroll wheel or middle mouse button? – Holding CTRL while left-clicking does the same thing! Try clicking this link with your mouse wheel button to open a practice page in a new tab where you’ll learn some more handy shortcuts such as closing tabs with Ctrl or Cmd + W
